ÉTYM. Mil. XXe; mots angl. « culture (civilisation) des galets (pebble) ».
Anglic. Didact. Ensemble des niveaux de civilisation technique de la préhistoire correspondant à l'emploi de pièces lithiques sur galets comme les choppers.Équivalent français : culture de galets (Denise de Sonneville-Bordes, l'Âge de la pierre, p. 44, qui emploie aussi pebble culture et pebble-tool [« outils de galet »] culture).
0 Les galets éclatés de la pebble culture répondent précisément à un stéréotype attesté par des millions d'objets. Leur confection suppose deux galets, l'un jouant le rôle de percuteur, l'autre recevant des chocs. Le choc est appliqué sur l'un des bords, perpendiculairement à la surface, et détache un éclat qui laisse sur le galet un tranchant vif; deux ou trois éclats successifs font un tranchant plus long et sinueux.
